Lake Merced West
The San Francisco Recreation and Park Department (RPD) and the San Francisco Public Utilities Commission (SFPUC) are jointly working on an Environmental Impact Report (EIR) to allow for the construction of new recreational elements at Lake Merced West (520 John Muir Drive) that will serve park users of all ages, fitness levels, and experience at this unique and natural waterfront setting.
The possible new recreational elements that will be publicly accessible may include the following: picnic areas, walking paths, a boathouse, a ropes course, bird watching areas, basketball courts and/or multi-purpose sport court, a playground, a skateboard park, public restrooms, a community building, and a restaurant.
The project description in the Draft EIR is used to illustrate the wide variety of new recreational use that could be possible at the site and should be studied for potential environmental impact.
Following comments received during the public comment period for the Draft EIR, a new section is being developed in the EIR to study a larger, 15,000 SF boathouse at Lake Merced West. This new project description will be included in the Response to Comments/Final EIR.
The Response to Comments to the Draft EIR will be published with the Final EIR in the fall of 2022. There will be another opportunity for the public to provide comment on the Response to Comments and Final EIR. Before the EIR is complete, there will be public hearings on the EIR before the Planning Commission and the Recreation and Park Commission.
Once the EIR is certified and complete, the Recreation and Park Department will begin work on a Request for Proposals (RFP) for prospective bidders to provide project proposals on the development, management, and operation of some of the recreational use (boathouse, ropes course, and restaurant) at Lake Merced West. Prior to launching the RFP, we will hold a meeting with the community to make sure it provides for a variety of options.
