[ARCHIVED] Skystar Observation Wheel to Temporarily Cease Operations as SF Moves to Purple Tier

Skystar Wheel

San Francisco (Saturday, November 28, 2020) — SkyStar Observation Wheel, the 150 ft tall observation wheel located in Golden Gate Park’s Music Concourse, will temporarily suspend operations effective Sunday, November 29 after health officials announced San Francisco entered the state’s purple tier due to a surge of Covid-19 cases.

All SkyStar Wheel ticket holders with reservations beginning Sunday, November 29 can reschedule their rides by visiting www.skystarwheel.com .

Observation wheels are among the activities required to cease for those counties in the most restrictive reopening color tier – purple. Each of the state’s color tiers is based on test positivity and adjusted case rate.

“Our priority is public safety and stopping the spread,” said San Francisco Recreation and Park General Manager Phil Ginsburg. “Golden Gate Park will continue to be an oasis to nurture our physical health and mental wellbeing, just as it has for 150 years. San Franciscans are resilient and responsible. Together we will recover, and the observation wheel will be here waiting for us.”

SkyView Partners Managing Partner Todd Schneider commented, “Since we opened six weeks ago, SkyStar has quickly become an important outdoor destination in the San Francisco Bay Area. While the city was the last to move into the purple tier, I’m optimistic San Francisco will be among the first to move out allowing us to return to daily operations. We encourage our guests who have future reservations to please visit our website in order to reschedule their ride for a new date.”

Since opening on October 21, the SkyStar Observation Wheel has rapidly established itself as a local landmark in the San Francisco Bay Area. Standing 150 feet tall, the state-of-the-art SkyStar Observation Wheel features 36 enclosed temperature-controlled gondolas, boasting unparalleled views from downtown San Francisco to the Pacific Ocean. The SkyStar Wheel was installed last March to be part of Golden Gate Park’s 150th anniversary celebration beginning April 4, but was delayed in opening due to the corona virus pandemic and the City’s shelter-in-place mandate.

The San Francisco Observation Wheel is located in the Music Concourse at Bowl Drive, the outdoor plaza near the de Young Museum, the California Academy of Sciences, and the Japanese Tea Garden.
