[ARCHIVED] Rec and Park GM Phil Ginsburg to serve on NRPA Board of Directors

SAN FRANCISCO, CA – The National Recreation and Parks Association has named San Francisco Recreation and Park Department General Manager Phil Ginsburg to its Board of Directors, SF Rec and Park officials announced today.

The National Recreation and Parks Association is the leading non-profit organization in the recreation and parks industry, with the Board of Directors serving as the organization’s governing board, responsible for creating and supervising policies. Ginsburg is one of 23 NRPA board directors.

The NRPA works with other non-profits, government agencies, business leaders, and academic institutions to champion the parks and recreation field through advocacy, grants, programs, research, and more.

Ginsburg has served as San Francisco Recreation and Parks Department general manager since 2009, overseeing 4,000 acres of open space and 225 parks throughout the city. During his tenure, Ginsburg has maintained a focus on increasing equity and access to the city’s parks. In 2018, San Francisco became the first city in the U.S. where every resident lives within a 10-minute walk of a park.

In 2019, California Gov. Gavin Newsom appointed Ginsburg to the State Park and Recreation Commission, where Ginsburg currently serves as vice chairperson. In August of this year, Ginsburg was inducted as a fellow into the American Academy for Park and Recreation Administration.

In addition, Ginsburg recently served as a board member on the City Parks Alliance, a national urban park advocacy organization. Prior to his current role as NRPA board director, Ginsburg served on NRPA’s Parks Recovery Task Force.

“With more than a decade of experience managing one of the country’s most innovative and well-known park systems, I’ve learned a thing or two about what it takes to inspire community and stewardship of shared spaces,” Ginsburg said. “I’m grateful for this opportunity and excited to bring my knowledge to the board, joining the ranks of some of the most talented people in the industry.”
