Artists Selected to Contribute to the Memory Walk at Buchanan Street Mall
Thank you to everyone who applied in the spring. After a thoughtful review process, guided by the Memory Walk Art Advisory Committee, nine artists have been selected to create original artwork as the Foundational Art for the Memory Walk at Buchanan Street Mall.
Selected Artists Include:
- Malik Seneferu
- Lewis Watts
- CamishaFatimah Gentry
- D’Wana Stewart
- Michael Reed Sr.
- Dyavena Sumler
- Cliffton Hyson
- Aniyah Keith
- Queen Sheppard
Each artist has a meaningful connection to The Fillmore and/or Buchanan Street Mall and has already begun developing ideas for their work.
Artist Construction Site Tour
Phase 1 of the Memory Walk project will weave themed storytelling in symbols embedded in the paving art and interpretive panels at gateway columns and fences, throughout all five blocks of the park.
In early December, the artists went for a tour of McGuire and Hester’s construction site, to have a first look at their “canvas,” as the Memory Walk begins to take shape. See attached for a few pictures of this tour.
Upcoming Events & Opportunities to Meet the Artists
The artists are beginning to develop their concepts and look forward to connecting with and receiving input from the community.
We invite you to meet several of our artists at the Fillmore Holiday Night Market on Friday, December 19, from 5-8 p.m. at Fillmore and O’Farrell. Malik Seneferu will be inviting public engagement with some of the symbols he is developing, to be embedded in the Memory Walk paving.
Also, mark your calendars to join us for a Buchanan Street Mall Community Meeting on January 15, 2026, from 6-8 p.m. at the African American Art & Culture Complex (AAACC).
