Buchanan Street Mall | Buchanan Mall Memory Walk and Workforce Development

Rec Park Improvements | All Project Updates Posted on August 27, 2024

It’s been an active August at Buchanan Street Mall! Rec and Park and project team staff participated in the carnival/ backpack give away/ jobs fair on August 3 and National Night Out on August 6. See pictures below of an activated Buchanan Mall.

At both events, we shared information on two key elements:

1) the Memory Walk art and storytelling process and formation of the Memory Walk Advisory Committee. See flyer (PDF) >>

2) the workforce development provisions worked into our best value contract for upcoming renovations on The Mall. See one-pager (PDF) >>

See attached fliers and continue reading for more information.

A Memory Walk Advisory Committee (MWAC) is being formed to shape the vision and process for Memory Walk art opportunities and ensure that the stories and art showcased at Buchanan Street Mall celebrate and reflect the values and history of the Fillmore community. With funding from a Prop 68 Statewide Park Grant, Trust for Public Land (TPL) is responsible for coordinating design of the Memory Walk. TPL is working closely with Rec and Park, Citizen Film, and other community partners, to invite about a dozen people to join the MWAC. The MWAC will represent local institutions, Bay Area artists, historians, and community members, and will begin meeting in September 2024.

If you’d like to learn more, or nominate yourself or someone else to participate in the MWAC, please contact BayAreaParks4People@tpl.org or scan the QR code in the flier to share your name and the best way to reach you. We’ll continue to share updates about the MWAC on our website, along with announcements for community workshops and other ways to provide input, and opportunities to showcase your art on the Memory Walk.

We're also excited to announce that on August 16, the project was advertised for public bid! This has us on track for the project to break ground in early 2025. Interested contractors can review the bid opportunity and access the bid documents via the City’s electronic bid documents download site. We are encouraging general contractors to partner with new minority-owned, woman-owned, and local small businesses enterprises to meet the project’s equity action goals.

A contractor networking event is being hosted Wednesday, August 28 at 10am on Buchanan Mall, to facilitate the creation of successful contractor teams. See the bid opportunity for details.

Feel free to reach out for any capital project, workforce development, and contracting questions.
