SAN FRANCISCO, CA – Skaters on San Francisco’s west side now have a place to roll and grind as the city’s latest coastal park, Sunset Dunes, has unveiled brand-new skate elements, the San Francisco Recreation and Park Department announced today.
The skate area, located along Sunset Dunes at Sloat Boulevard, was designed for skaters of all skill levels and includes a bank, quarter pipe, island feature, and several creatively designed elements crafted from upcycled granite—blending sustainability with recreation. The additions mark a milestone in the transformation of this coastal site into an active, engaging community space offering fun activities for people of all ages.
“Sunset Dunes is quickly becoming one of San Francisco’s most exciting new spaces, and these skate features are the perfect addition,” said SF Rec and Park General Manager Phil Ginsburg. “They bring energy, creativity, and community to the park—and with the help of our talented local skaters, Sunset Dunes is well on its way to becoming the city’s next great skate destination.”
Since its opening in mid-April, Sunset Dunes has become one of the city’s most popular parks, averaging more than 3,400 daily visits since late March, including some 4,900 visits on weekends. Visitors at the new park can now enjoy a variety of activities, including interactive art installations, expanded seating for community events and live music, a Nature Exploration Area for kids, and a bike pump track and skills course.
“Sunset Dunes is becoming a gathering place for all types of outdoor recreation – walking, biking and now skating,” said Eliza Panike, volunteer with Friends of Sunset Dunes. “The west side is finally getting long-awaited skate infrastructure, which the neighborhood hasn’t had since 2022. For too long, skaters on this side of the city had nowhere to call home. Now, they’ve got one, and it’s at a beautiful community park right by the ocean. Thank you to SF Rec and Park for making this a reality for our neighborhood.”
“Designed for all levels, this new space offers simple fun terrain with upcycled elements—and the ocean is just steps away. This spot’s got everything you need to roll, learn, and hang,” said skateboard advocate Ashley Rehfeld.
The skate features, part of an $80,000 project at Sunset Dunes, are located next to the existing bike pump track and bike skills course, which was completed in April of this year. The project also includes improvements at the Sloat gateway. The skate elements are interim improvements, designed to be relocated or removed as necessary as the park continues to evolve.
The features were developed in collaboration with local skate leaders, including Rehfield and Chris Long, both San Francisco skate advocates. The skate features were fabricated by Kanfoush Custom Concrete.
To celebrate the project’s completion, SF Rec and Park will host a Skate and Play Day at Sunset Dunes at Sloat Boulevard on Friday, June 27 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Skaters of all ages and skill levels are invited to enjoy an afternoon of skating, music, and local skate culture.
As part of the City’s Shop Dine SF initiative, skaters — along with their friends and families — are encouraged to support local businesses by visiting nearby restaurants, cafés, and skate shops located around our parks. To see the full “Shop Dine SF After the Skate Sesh” list, click here.
