McLaren Trails | Tree work continues & Contract award at Rec Park Commission this Thursday

Rec Park Improvements | All Project Updates Posted on August 13, 2024

Tree work continues as part of the first phase of construction for the McLaren Trails Priority Improvements project.

Please be advised – Access to the University Hill area is now open again. See below for some recent photos of the work nearing completion. Please use caution when traveling along the degraded asphalt path and use the dirt path as needed. This path and stairs will be removed and replaced as part of the forthcoming trail work, anticipated to begin before the end of the year.

The tree work contractor has moved back across Shelley Drive East into the area south of Grey Fox Creek, to take advantage of a lull in activity at the Jerry Garcia Amphitheater. For your own safety, follow all detour signs and stay out of fenced areas. Please see the map below for the approximate area of temporary closures.

We have received on-budget bids for the McLaren and Twin Peaks Trails project, which includes the bulk of this project’s trail work and habitat restoration scope, as well as a portion of a similar trails projects at Twin Peaks. A recommendation for the contract award is on the agenda for Recreation and Parks Commission this Thursday 8/15 at 10am in City Hall Room 416 and online. For agenda and connection details >>

The blue gum eucalyptus trees in McLaren are a species brought from Australia and planted extensively in San Francisco in the early 1900s. These trees were planted very densely and require maintenance. Tree work for this project includes pruning or removing trees to clear space for new multi-use trails, restore habitat, and improve pedestrian safety in the understory. Rec and Park has committed to replanting a tree for every tree removed as a part of this project.
