SAN FRANCISCO, CA –San Francisco Recreation and Park Commission President Kathleen “Kat” Anderson will serve a second term on California’s Off-Highway Motor Vehicle Commission after being reappointed by Governor Gavin Newsom Friday.
Anderson has served on the state commission since 2023. She has been a San Francisco Rec and Park Commissioner since 2016, becoming president in 2023 after serving as vice president.
She has been an attorney with the Law Offices of Kathleen Stewart Anderson since 1991. Anderson was managing owner of Word. A Café in the Bayview from 2018 to 2022. She earned a Juris Doctor degree from the University of California Law, San Francisco, and a Bachelor of Arts degree in political science from Stanford University.
“I have two San Francisco mayors to thank for enabling me to serve my favorite park, open space, and recreational communities. Gratitude to Governor Newsom for enabling me to join many fine people who work to improve and expand safe and responsible access to off-highway recreation in California,” Anderson said. “I hope to bring more off-road activities to San Francisco. It’s an honor to focus my energies on making outdoor activities accessible, educational, and fun.”
California's Off-Highway Motor Vehicle Recreation (OHMVR) Commission was created by the Legislature in 1982. The nine-member commission is responsible for the approval of general plans, receives public comments about the program, and reviews plans for new and expanded recreation areas applying for grant funds. Commission membership is intended to represent a broad range of groups including OHV recreation enthusiasts, biological or soil scientists, rural landowners, law enforcement, environmental protection organizations, and non-motorized recreation interests. This position requires Senate confirmation, and the compensation is $100 per diem. Anderson is a Democrat.
The Recreation and Park Commission is primarily a policy-making body, establishing the policies by which the Recreation and Park Department operates. The Commission is responsible for the over 230 parks, playgrounds, and open spaces throughout San Francisco and two outside the city limits. These include destinations such as Camp Mather, Golden Gate Park, Harding Golf Course, Coit Tower, Palace of Fine Arts
