Twin Peaks Trail Improvement Project and Promenade Project | Project Update, January 2026

Rec Park Improvements | All Project Updates Posted on January 13, 2026

With the Twin Peaks Trail Improvement Project now complete, focus has shifted to the delivery of the Twin Peaks Promenade Project, an important next phase in reimagining this iconic San Francisco destination.

Over the past several months, the project team has been finalizing the construction bid package. This work included close coordination with the City’s Disability Access Coordinator, the Municipal Transportation Agency (MTA), and the Fire Department to ensure the design complies with all applicable codes and access requirements. The team also completed a detailed cost analysis and refined the plans to align with the project budget.

The project was advertised for construction bids in late November, and contractor bids are due on January 14. The City looks forward to selecting the successful bidder who will ultimately bring the Twin Peaks Promenade to life.

The Twin Peaks Promenade Project will transform approximately one-third of a mile of the eastern alignment of Twin Peaks Boulevard, permanently closed to vehicles, into a linear park featuring a multi-use, universally accessible recreational trail.

Ecological protection and restoration are central to the project’s design. Planned improvements include partial asphalt removal, installation of stabilized soil trail surfacing, native plantings, new seating areas, gabion and Sutter walls, and ornamental boulders. Grant funding will support vegetation and habitat restoration, erosion control measures, decommissioning of informal social trails that are currently damaging sensitive butterfly habitat, installation of split-rail fencing to protect ecological areas, and new informational signage.

Additional improvements will reconfigure the existing parking lot to provide ADA access, install bicycle parking at multiple locations, and maintain emergency and service access through the use of removable bollards.

Construction is anticipated to begin in Spring 2026 and conclude in early 2027. Once complete, the Twin Peaks Promenade will provide a safer, more welcoming, and more ecologically resilient regional destination for residents and visitors alike.
