The Panhandle is a long, narrow park three-quarters of a mile long and one block wide, that connects with Golden Gate Park to the west.

The Panhandle includes basketball courts, restroom, playground and walking and biking trails the run the length of the park.

The park's playground reopened in fall 2019 after an extensive renovation. The renovation was part of the Let’s Play SF! Initiative, a public-private partnership dedicated to raising sufficient funds to ensure that 13 playgrounds across the City in need of renovation could be reimagined for San Francisco’s children. These playgrounds serve 20,000 children and were selected for renovation by a Playgrounds Task Force because they contain unhealthy wood or are in low-to moderate-income neighborhoods dense with children.

The basketball court was renovated in 2016 through a partnership with the Warriors Community Foundation and Good Tidings Foundation, and named in honor of Golden State Warriors great Nate Thurmond.
