While waterproofing and concrete pours continue in the plaza, work on the underside of the plaza is also happening in the garage. Construction highlights include:
Plaza/Pagoda Work:
- Strengthening the Pagoda concrete ring beams and columns
- Installing sleeves in the Pagoda for the tendons that run roof to foundation
- Concrete form work and pours of the plaza steps and terraced seating planters
Garage Work: both day and night work throughout late May into late-June.
- For new beams: Scaffolding, shoring and formwork for the beams in the garage ceiling. Approximately 34 parking spots in both upper and lower level will be affected along the north side through mid-June).
- For plumbing installation: Relocation of sprinkler heads, including work over the ramp leading to lower level.
- For Pagoda: scaffolding, shoring and concrete coring continue under the pagoda through late 2025 (approximately 60 parking spots under pagoda, in both upper and lower garage levels).
- Drive cautiously and follow posted detours signs on both upper and lower levels. Please do not walk on the ramp between levels.
Access to and throughout Japan Center Malls and Garage:
- Access from Geary Boulevard: Use the Geary Boulevard parking garage to access both East Mall and West Mall.
- Access from Post Street: Use the new posted detours into East Mall adjacent to U.S. Bank and to West Malls through the middle of construction entrance.
- Sidewalk: Accessible pedestrian detour is open along the north side of Geary between Laguna to Buchanan Streets. For safety, follow all detours, stay within fenced pedestrian detour lane, and avoid walking in the bus lanes.
