Rec Park Improvements | All Project Updates Posted on May 15, 2025

Weekend Work Advisory

There will be weekend work on-site this Saturday, May 17. We expect noise to be limited due to the scope of work and minimal heavy equipment use. This is the last weekend work scheduled for May.

Heavy Construction Activity Next Week

Next week, on Monday, May 19 and Friday, May 23, between 7 am – 3 pm, there will be increased construction activity as the contractor pours the concrete foundation. On each of these two days, the contractor will bring in and pour nearly 80 truckloads of concrete.

The contractor has a permit to close one lane of Folsom Street on these days. Two large concrete pumps will be used: one within the site and the other on Folsom Street. Please plan for the lane closure, increased traffic, impacts to street parking, and more noise on these two days.

The first pour, on Monday, May 19, will be near the corner of Folsom and Sixth, and roughly corresponds with the area of the new gymnasium. The second pour, on Friday, May 23, will complete the remainder of the building.

We anticipate steel superstructure installation will begin the week of June 2.

Rec Park Commission Approves Contract Amendment

The Recreation and Park Commission approved a contract increase today (Thursday, May 15). You can find the Commission staff report and presentation under the “Documents and Materials” tab of the project page.

A large portion of our increased costs were the result of very challenging soil conditions, however, the contract increase also allowed us to include the following design elements:

  • Adding a retractable partition in the gymnasium to allow for maximum flexibility in programming
  • Adding a “foldable wall of windows” in the multi-purpose room on the Harriet-side that will allow the room to be opened to the park
  • Funding our full list of playground equipment, as well as two pieces of adult exercise equipment. These had been bid as contract alternates, but are now fully funded
  • Adding improvements to our emergency power systems to optimize emergency preparedness planning / resiliency

Thank you for your patience throughout construction and thank you for your support of this transformative project.
