It’s been a quiet few weeks in McLaren Park, as our contractor postponed planned work due to bird nesting activity. A biologist conducted follow up pre-construction surveys over the weekend and Tuesday evening, and having received reports of no bird nesting and no bat roosting activity, the contractor will begin work in the area of Jerry Garcia Amphitheater on Thursday, April 18th.
While work is underway, the paved path between the Jerry Garcia Amphitheater parking lot and Jerry Garcia Amphitheater will be closed. Snow fencing is being put up to secure the work area. For your own safety and the safety of workers, please follow all signs and honor all trail closures. Dog walkers are advised to follow all off-leash dog play area regulations and keep close watch on all dogs in their care.
The project is removing trees for safety, habitat enhancement, and trail alignment reasons, in association with the trail improvements and natural features restoration work to follow. The project went through extensive public engagement to develop a project scope which received support from neighbors and stakeholder groups, in advance of Rec and Park Commission approval in December 2022. The department is diligently tracking and following all applicable codes and regulations, and our contractors are working within approvals granted through CEQA and by the Rec and Park Commission.
We ask for your patience and cooperation during construction, which will occur throughout 2024-25, and we look forward to unveiling improved trails and continually restoring precious habitat.
