  1. Joint Zoo Committee

    Section 16.3 of the Management Agreement specifies that the “Joint Zoo Committee,” which was established in 1982 prior to the Management Agreement and which consists of three members of the Recreation and Park Commission and three members of the Zoological Society’s Board of Directors, shall be maintained throughout the term of the Agreement and shall hold public meetings at least 11 times per calendar year to discuss and hear public testimony regarding major policies affecting the Zoo, including without limitation the setting of fees, new animal exhibits, animal acquisition and disposition policies, land use, and capital and operating budgets.

  2. Recreation and Park Commission Meeting

    The Recreation and Park Department is governed by a seven-member Commission appointed by the Mayor to four-year terms. In accordance with the Charter, the Recreation and Park Commission is primarily a policy-making body, establishing the policies by which the Recreation and Park Department operates. The Commission is responsible for the over 220 parks, playgrounds and open spaces throughout San Francisco and two outside the City limits. These include destinations such as Camp Mather, Golden Gate Park, Harding Golf Course, Coit Tower, Palace of Fine Arts.

  2. Alta Plaza Volunteer Workparty

    Join the Friends of Alta Plaza Park for a “Cleaning and Greening” workday on the second Saturday of the month every March, June, September and December.  Help the SFRPD gardeners maintain the park, while meeting your neighbors.  Volunteers install new plantings, lay down mulch, weed, sweep, edge and more. Please wear layered clothing, a sun hat and closed-toe shoes, and bring a refillable water bottle. All tools provided.   4. Strawberry Hill Butterfly Habitat Restoration Project

    If you love your parks, and are looking for a meaningful way to make a difference, come on out and volunteer with the SF Recreation and Park Department! On the 2nd Saturday of every month, we enhance habitat on Strawberry Hill in Golden Gate Park. We remove invasive weeds, and put in plants that Swallowtails and other butterflies need to thrive. We’re seeking both drop-in and regular volunteers. Instruction and tools provided. Please wear closed-toe shoes and dress in layers. Water bottle and sunblock are recommended.
