    Join the City’s multi-agency community meeting to learn more about the proposed South Ocean Beach Multi-Use Trail Project! Together with the SF Public Utility Commission, this proposed Recreation and Parks project will replace the Great Highway between Sloat and Skyline as part of the City’s multi-agency Ocean Beach Climate Change Adaptation Project. The project will build a new multi-use trail that is approximately 12’ wide, a plaza at Sloat, a parking lot and restroom.

    The Recreation and Park Department is governed by a seven-member Commission appointed by the Mayor to four-year terms. In accordance with the Charter, the Recreation and Park Commission is primarily a policy-making body, establishing the policies by which the Recreation and Park Department operates. The Commission is responsible for the over 220 parks, playgrounds and open spaces throughout San Francisco and two outside the City limits. These include destinations such as Camp Mather, Golden Gate Park, Harding Golf Course, Coit Tower, Palace of Fine Arts.

  2. Joint Zoo Committee

    Section 16.3 of the Management Agreement specifies that the “Joint Zoo Committee,” which was established in 1982 prior to the Management Agreement and which consists of three members of the Recreation and Park Commission and three members of the Zoological Society’s Board of Directors, shall be maintained throughout the term of the Agreement and shall hold public meetings at least 11 times per calendar year to discuss and hear public testimony regarding major policies affecting the Zoo, including without limitation the setting of fees, new animal exhibits, animal acquisition and disposition policies, land use, and capital and operating budgets.

  5. Strawberry Hill Butterfly Habitat Restoration Project

    If you love your parks, and are looking for a meaningful and substantive way to make a positive difference, come on out and volunteer with the San Francisco Recreation and Park Department! On the second Saturday of every month, we enhance habitat on Strawberry Hill in Golden Gate Park. We remove invasive weeds, and put in plant species that Swallowtails and other butterflies need to thrive. This is an ongoing program – we’re looking for both occasional volunteers, and those who would like to be involved on a regular basis.
