Planted boxes in a community garden

Seeking volunteers to support RPD’s new urban agriculture resource centers. These resource centers will be open to any gardener in the city of San Francisco to access supplies such as compost, mulch, and soil.  We need volunteers to host open hours at these sites.  We are looking for individuals to commit to four to eight periods a month of two to four hours each on a regular weekday (day is to be determined) and/or Saturday.  This could be a combination of several volunteers, or just a few dedicated ones.  The first site to open is the Golden Gate Park CommUNITY Garden at Frederick and Arguello.  Orientation will be a 1 hour orientation with the urban agriculture program coordinator and supplementary handout for reference when volunteering.

Volunteers will:

  • Open and close the garden resource centers
  • Welcome people to the site
  • Explain how the urban agriculture resource centers work
  • Help people access materials and move them if need be
  • Loan tools and seeds on an as-needed basis
  • Monitor the materials bins and amount people take away
  • Record the numbers of attendees
  • Other tasks on an as-needed basis
  • Keep people in the resource center area and respecting the community gardeners’ plots

  • Must be 16 or older
  • Available to make a commitment of at least a pair of weekdays and Saturdays a month (4 hours minimum, 32 hours max a month) for at least six months
  • Be able to speak English, Spanish or Chinese and communicate effectively with a wide range of visitors
  • Undergo yearly training with the Urban Agriculture Program Coordinator
  • Be willing to be around soil, bugs, and sunshine and inclement weather
