Roller skating, which once ruled sidewalks and rinks across America, has fallen on hard times. Skateboards and — to a lesser extent, inline skates — have supplanted the wheeled shoes that were hugely popular during the disco era.
But in Golden Gate Park, a small but dedicated group of eight-wheel aficionados not only keep the sport alive, they turn it into an almost religious experience.
Film maker Daniel Soares captures the joy of these dancers on skates in a short documentary called “Totally Free.” Watch what fun they have.
