May is drawing to a close and the harbor renovation has seen spectacular in-water progress over the last month, while the landside work has limped along. Work interruptions, material delivery delays, and over optimism has become the norm for work on the harbormaster building. As the month draws to a close, the harbormaster is still without his office and boaters without showers. At latest report, our Contractor believes the building will be substantially complete by June 11. If all the work passes inspection, the restrooms and showers will be opened up for public use. The harbormaster and his staff will remain in their temporary trailer accommodations until the site work around the building is completed.
In-water work is progressing faster than expected. During the month of May the Contractor completed demolition of the end of the West Mole and the reconstruction of its cobble facade. Large loads of new concrete floats and piles were delivered early in the month and C and E docks are now almost completely assembled and installed.
During June the Contractor will be focused on the installation of dock utilities, gates and appurtenances on C and E docks. If all goes well, 128 new slips will be ready to accept vessels by the end of the month. In the next few weeks harbor staff will behin contacting boat owners with vessels moored in the remaining timber docks. These vessels will need to be relocated in preparation of the final phase of dock demolition and dredging, which will begin in early July.
Boaters are reminded that during the driving of piles and installation of new docks in the inner-basin, access to vessels moored off the Marina seawall may be restricted due to the presence of construction equipment and silt curtains. Our Contractors will do their best to provide clear passage for vessels entering and exiting the harbor. However, boaters in the inner-basin should expect periodic delays during weekday working hours over the course of the next several months. Whenever possible, we ask that boaters moored in the inner-basin contact the Harbor office prior to scheduling a trip to confirm that the fairways will be clear of construction vessels and equipment. Again, we appreciate your patience.
