Movie Night in Duboce Park features “Milk”
July 25, 2015 @ 8:30 pm - 11:30 pm| Free
MOVIE NIGHT IN DUBOCE PARK THIS SATURDAY
Outdoor Movie Night returns to Duboce Park on Saturday, July 26 with “Milk” (2008, rated R) starring Sean Penn as Harvey Milk. Movies with a San Francisco theme have been shown at all of our previous Movie Nights, including “Pursuit of Happyness” in 2010, “The Rock” in 2011, “The Incredibles” in 2011, and “Mrs. Doubtfire” in 2012, “Invasion of the Body Snatchers” in 2013, and “So I Married an Axe Murderer” in 2014.
Using flashbacks from a statement recorded late in life and archival footage for atmosphere, the film traces Harvey Milk’s career from his 40th birthday to his death. He leaves the closet and New York in 1972, opens a camera shop in the Castro and helps transform the area into a mecca for gays and lesbians. He runs for office with lover Scott Smith (James Franco) as his campaign manager. In 1977 Milk becomes the nation’s first openly gay man elected to a notable office when he wins a seat on the Board of Supervisors. The film also presents Milk’s relationship with Dan White (Josh Brolin) and the 1978 fight against a statewide initiative to bar gays and their supporters from public school jobs.
The movie begins around 8:30 p.m. Movie Bingo cards will be distributed before the movie begins and the first five people who correctly and completely fill out and submit their bingo cards will win gift cards to Peet’s. Each square on the card has a question about the movie to be answered.
The event is free and is sponsored by Friends of Duboce Park and San Francisco Recreation & Parks. For more information or to volunteer, please contact FPD President Doug Woo at firstname.lastname@example.org.
