Eyes on the City – USF Student Photo Exhibit

Eyes On The City Cable Car

This exhibit is the result of a collaboration between the University of San Francisco’s Urban Studies Program and the Harvey Milk Photo Center. Photographers in the exhibit were part of “Photo Praxis and the City,” a class taught and designed by Prof. Pedro Lange-Churion, which exposed students to diverse texts on theory of the urban and specific texts on San Francisco’s urban dimensions. Students were also exposed to the work of diverse photographers who have captured urban phenomena in various formal styles. Most students had no previous experience with analog photography and none had consistently worked in dark room printing. Their effort, after a five-week workshop taught by photographers Chris Gould and Jason Andrescavage yielded a collection of photographs on the city that includes a variety of themes: some photographs feature images of public transport reminiscent of Fred Lyon’s famous images of San Francisco’s street cars; strangely calming and elegant architectural photographs of the city; unexpected sites of loneliness in busy streets and dinners, transitory spaces like train stations and airports; and naked torsos exercising their right to the city and foregrounding the eternal tension between the natural and the constructed. Central to Eyes on the City is the work in analog photography and dark room printing. Without disqualifying the merits of digital photography, this experience sought to reconnect these young photographers with a more meditative and deliberate way of seeing.
