White Crane Springs Community Garden has been providing beauty and pleasure to the Sunset District since the 1970’s. Located just South of 7th and Lawton Streets, WCS is open to the public and provides a peaceful respite from City life.
Our garden of nearly 90 individual plots and areas of community space is maintained by more than six dozen garden members in the true sense of “natural” gardening – the best organic practices, IPM (Integrated Pest Management) and sustainability projects including composting, sheet mulching and a Cob shed complete with a green living roof.
The Recreation and Park Department supports and manages a program of 35 (and growing!) community gardens on City-owned property, where members can grow produce and ornamental plants for personal use. Gardens range in size from a few hundred square feet to thousands of square feet; some offer individual plots while others have shared plots. Some gardens also offer demonstration gardening or other instructional programming.
Each garden is operated by a group of committed volunteers, and membership fees are often self-imposed to cover common expenses.
