Alamo Square Construction Update!

Hello! I’d like to introduce myself as the new Project Manager for the Alamo Square Restroom and Irrigation Upgrade Project. As of mid-September we are approximately 50% of the way through the $4.3 million renovation project. The contractor has nearly completed the installation of the modern, water-efficient, irrigation system that will save approximately 3.26 million gallons of water per year.

Right now we are anticipating an extension to the construction schedule with a planned reopening of the park in March. This schedule change is due to some added improvements that were not part of the original project scope. These particular improvements to the park include pathway repairs, and a substantial amount of new sod to replace areas of poorly performing grass, in addition to the new native and drought-tolerant shrub and groundcover plantings. We have also been working closely with ASNA (the Alamo Square Neighborhood Association) to incorporate their gift of new trees and donor recognition pavers into the project, which is pending final approval.

A few weeks from now, the installation of the new lawn will begin. The initial lawn work will be for a new viewing area opening in December. The temporary viewing area along Steiner Street will be relocated as shown in the diagrams below in order to complete the remaining park renovation work.

The new viewing area will be accessible from the corner of Hayes and Steiner Streets and will feature a newly established lawn and a better vantage of the Painted Ladies and San Francisco skyline. Photo opportunities from the new viewing area will be as shown in the photo below.

Construction of the new ADA-compliant restroom, located by the playground, is also well underway. The contractor has finished pouring the curved concrete wall and will complete the roof prior to the rainy season. Once the exterior of the building is complete, the interior plumbing, fixtures, and tile will be added.

Thank you for your interest in Alamo Square. We are looking forward to reopening the improved park soon!
