The Gene Friend Recreation Center project represents the wholescale construction of a brand-new facility. Currently, the project team is working on implementing the Construction Manager/General Contractor (CM/GC) contract mechanism, where the contractor team and core trade subcontractors embark on several rounds of cost estimating and constructability review and reconciliation with the architects and project team.
The design team has completed the schematic design phase and done several rounds of cost estimating, constructability review, and value engineering with the contractor team. Folks have been super collaborative and holding true to the values, priorities, and programs established in the concept design that was approved by the Rec and Park Commission in 2019 after a robust community engagement process. We are now in the design development phase of the project, where we start to flesh out the details.
The project team is expecting to provide design and schedule updates to the community at an online community meeting update in late April or May. Rec and Park will be co-hosting this meeting with the Arts Commission so that they can review the process for incorporating arts enrichment into the project.
Stay tuned for more details!
