Five years ago, two parking spaces disappeared from Divisadero Street near Alamo Square and a new form of public space was born: the parklet.

There now are 50 such spaces in San Francisco, with another 25 or so in the works. You can find them across the region, across the country, around the world. In a very real way, these diminutive nooks are San Francisco’s most influential urban design innovation going back decades.
