National Park and Recreation Month!

National Park and Rec Month, July 2015

July is National Park and Recreation Month! Together with the National Recreation and Park Association (NRPA) and recreation and park agencies across the country, we’re celebrating the importance of our parks by inviting all of you to get out and play this month.

Celebrate with us by visiting your local parks, using the hashtag #JulyPRM30 on your social media, and participating in NRPA’s awesome 1980s-style Video Challenge.

Here’s a rundown of some of the exciting things going on in your parks this month:

July 5: Women’s World Cup Broadcast at Civic Center

Join Rec and Park and America SCORES Bay Area for a FREE, live broadcast of the Women’s World Cup Finals at Civic Center. Along with watching the games on the big screen, fans will be able to get their faces painted in team colors, scrimmage on mini soccer courts and take part soccer skills activities provided by Soccer in Slow Motion.  Food trucks by Off the Grid. 4 p.m.; FREE; Polk and Grove streets

July 7: SoMa Movie Night at Victoria Manalo Draves Park

“Pee Wee’s Big Adventure” hosted by the Friends of VMD/Gene Friend Rec Center from 7 p.m. to 11 p.m.; FREE; Folsom & Sherman streets

July 15: William Hammond Hall Awards at the Golden Gate Yacht Club

In partnership with Local 261, the City and County of San Francisco and Rec and Park will host the 7th Annual William Hammond Hall Awards on Wednesday, July 15 at 3:30 p.m., at the Golden Gate Yacht Club.  These annual awards honor the top professionals in gardening and horticulture and recognize the men and women who work day in and day out to make our parks clean and beautiful.  This year’s event emcees are Supervisor Mark Farrell and Assessor-Recorder Carmen Chu.

July 17-18: V-O-Cal (Volunteers for Outdoor California) @ Glen Canyon Park

Join our RPD Natural Areas Program Gardeners for an annual collaborative volunteer project with Volunteers for Outdoor California (V-O-Cal) at Glen Canyon Park.  The work party site has an amazing 70 green acres of trails through lushly forested hills in the heart of the city of San Francisco.  The volunteer tasks will be varied and exciting with some amazing scenery. July 18: Community Clean Team event at Waller/District 5 Golden Gate Park

Join community volunteers to celebrate 15 years of volunteering with the Public Works Community Clean Team.  Put on your work clothes, bring a friend, and join us as we work on projects across the City. Volunteers can expect projects that include, weeding, re-chipping medians, park beautification, painting public furniture, removing graffiti, and planting.  Lunch will be provided for volunteers, RSVP required.  Join the team that keeps San Francisco clean and green! 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.; Golden Gate Park at Stanyan and Waller streets.

July 18: SoMa Movie Night at Victoria Manalo Draves Park

“The Goonies”, hosted by the Friends of VMD/Gene Friend Rec Center from 7 p.m. to 11 p.m.; FREE; Folsom & Sherman streets.

July 25: Play Day at Palega Rec Center

Join Rec and Park for a FREE day of fun and activities at Palega Recreation Center.  Sports activities, games, prizes, climbing wall, carnival rides and food trucks. 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.; FREE; 500 Felton Street

July 26: San Francisco Marathon through Golden Gate Park

Come watch some of the world’s best athletes as they make their way though scenic Golden Gate Park.  http://www.thesfmarathon.com/

July 27: Rec and Park Employee Appreciation Day at SF Giants

San Francisco Pro-Am Basketball at Kezar Pavilion

The 36th season of the San Francisco Bay Area Pro-Am Summer Basketball League continues at Kezar Pavilion in Golden Gate Park.  For the past 35 years, basketball fans have enjoyed watching pros, college players and international stars battle in a highly competitive and equally entertaining brand of basketball throughout the summer months. Supported by the San Francisco Recreation and Park Department, the league runs from June through August and features evening games Monday through Thursday for the men’s teams and on Saturday afternoons for the women’s.
