Thank you for your ongoing support of the renovations at Larsen! Many of you have been asking about the Playground opening. We are glad to report that the surfaces, much of the play equipment and landscaping for the new park have largely been completed.
Earlier this spring the team managing the project – made up of representatives from the Recreation and Park Department, the Parks Alliance, Friends of Larsen and JDB & Sons Construction – concluded that the artist originally selected to design and fabricate the plane structure could not meet the specifications in the contract. As a result, the team made the difficult decision to terminate the contract.
This decision was not taken lightly. In consultation with the Parks Alliance, Friends of Larsen, Assessor-Recorder Carmen Chu and Supervisor Katy Tang, the Recreation and Park Department has since contacted GameTime, a reputable and well-known playground equipment manufacturer that has done great work in many other Bay Area parks.
GameTime is working to design something as similar as possible to what was originally envisioned – a plane structure with a climbing net that is safe, fun and exciting for children to experience.
We expect the Playground, complete with a plane, to re-open this Fall (anticipated November). In an effort to protect the equipment that has been installed and the new planting, the contractor is keeping the site secured until the plane is delivered for installation. Thank you for your patience and understanding. We will post details as soon as we have them about the formal opening celebration.
