77 of the 169 people who’ve been assigned plots in the new Golden Gate Park CommUNITY Garden volunteered their time in one or more 2-hr “shifts” this Saturday to help prepare the garden for opening. Volunteers measured, cut and stapled hardware cloth to the inside of raised beds to deter gopher activity. They shoveled and transported dozens of wheelbarrow loads of rich soil into the beds. They raked and swept the demonstration garden area and pathway, met their neighbors, exchanged snacks and planting ideas that they brought to share.
We are working in the coming weeks with those folks assigned to plots to complete preparations, and look forward to opening the garden and resource center to the general public very soon.
