Geneva Community Garden Still in Progress

Thank you for your patience as the creation of a community garden at Geneva Ave and Delano has taken longer than anticipated. Environmental remediation was lengthier and more expensive than expected but has been completed.

To supplement original funding, Rec and Park pursued and secured additional grant funding of $900,000 from two state Housing Related Parks grants.

The project was advertised to contractors in spring 2016; however, the low bid contractor unexpectedly withdrew his bid, and the other 4 bids we received came back much higher than anticipated, so we had to go back to the drawing board to make some changes.

We remain very excited about a community garden at this site. The project will be re-advertised in early fall 2016. Construction is expected to start in early 2017 and will be completed summer 2017 per deadline for the two Housing Related Parks grants.

After hearing some concerns from neighbors regarding the current condition of the space, Rec and Park Operations staff responded by removing weeds and debris this week (see photo below)

Funding for this project comes from the 2008 Clean and Safe Neighborhood Parks Bond Community Opportunity Fund ($387K), Supervisor Avalos’ Office ($55K) and two state Housing Related Parks Grants ($900K).
