Help V-O-Cal Build Trails on Twin Peaks

August 19 @ 5:00 pm - August 21 @ 2:00 pm

| Free
Twin Peaks

Volunteer with SFRPD gardeners and V-O-Cal (Volunteer for Outdoor California) on Friday, August 19 to Sunday, August 21, 2016 for one day or the whole weekend to help build and improve trails on San Francisco’s Twin Peaks.

V-O-Cal will be helping to improve the “walkability” of Twin Peaks with improvements in several areas. Volunteers will be removing old wooden stairs and rerouting two sections that lead up to the peaks and creating a new section of trail along the roadway to create a protected walkway for pedestrians. Volunteers will camp in Glen Park and hike to the worksite each day.

  • You can make friends and earn community service hours.  No experience necessary
  • You can make a lasting contribution by building or improving an existing trail.
  • You can volunteer on the trail for kitchen duty or help out in camp.
  • All tools, gloves, instructions and delicious food are provided.

To register, please visit the website, www.v-o-cal.org.  Children 14 and over are welcome on V-O-Cal projects. Volunteers under 16 must be accompanied by an adult.  For photos of our recent projects, please visit Volunteers for Outdoor California on Facebook.  Don’t miss this opportunity to build trail on one of San Francisco’s most recognizable landmarks!

Twin Peaks is 922 feet in elevation, second only to Mt. Davidson in height, offers spectacular views of the Bay Area, and is a world- famous tourist attraction. Its two adjacent peaks provide postcard views and a treasure trove of animal and plant diversity. The vegetation is primarily a mix of grassland and coastal scrub. Expect strong winds as you hike among plants such as coyote brush, lizard tail, pearly everlasting and lupine. The endangered Mission Blue Butterfly has adapted to the strong winds and flies low to the ground from lupine to lupine. Native plants provide habitat for brush-nesting birds like the white-crowned sparrow and animals such as brush rabbits and coyotes.
