The New Sunset Rec Center

Residents of the Sunset District have enjoyed Sunset Recreation Center since 1940, making it a main hub of activity for kids in the outer Sunset. In response to community needs, the Recreation and Park Department is dedicating nearly $14 million of the 2008 Clean and Safe Neighborhood Parks Bond to ensure this local treasure will continue to promote good health and community togetherness through its recreational facilities. The renovation of Sunset Recreation Center is scheduled to be completed in summer 2012.

Mixed Martial Arts courses for youth ranging from Muay Thai, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, boxing, Judo, and wrestling. These classes are contact sports and competitive.

This is a beginning mixed martial art program for kids that focuses on the fundamentals of combat athletics. Kids learn all the forms of resistance based martial arts that involve standing-up, clinching, and ground fighting. Our motto is play as the way (developed by Straight Blast Gym) because training in mixed martial arts should be fun! Kids build up attributes such as self-esteem, self-discipline, & social skills while also increasing their physical attributes through competition and sparing. In conjunction with the United States Tennis Association-Northern California Division, the San Francisco Recreation & Park Department is introducing the QuickStart Junior Tennis Academy. The QuickStart format uses child appropriate equipment, such as smaller racquets, larger tennis balls, & smaller courts in order to transition young aspiring tennis players into the lifetime sport of tennis. Technical skills are easier to learn & children can have more fun & tennis physical activity with this new program & league play. The Junior Tennis Academy is for the more advanced junior tennis player with a stress on more complex technical instruction: continental grips on serve, volley, chips, and semi-western grips on forehands. The ideal student is someone who is looking to progress towards United States Tennis Association junior novice tournament & league play. All participants must wear tennis shoes & have a tennis racquet. Wear athletic shoes and clothing.

Kids will learn movements taken from various traditional and functional martial arts. This class DOES NOT teach fighting techniques or combat. Little Kickers will provide young participants basic knowledge and the foundation to grow in martial arts. This class is perfect for tots who want to be exposed to different movements other than in mainstream sports. Registrants must be at least 4 years old at the beginning of the course to participate. Students will have the opportunity to purchase a uniform and belts for an extra fee.

Karate originated in the Okinawan Islands of Japan and has branched out into many different styles. Karate Kidz is a structured class that teaches formalized, sequenced movements which represent offensive and defensive postures known as Kata.

Students will also learn kicking, punching, blocking and other open hand techniques. Students will have the opportunity to purchase a uniform and belts for an extra fee.

The ancient form of belly dance has been practiced for thousand of years and remains exceptionally popular throughout the world. Belly dancing tones muscles, is energized, and can be learned by people of all fitness levels. During the class, we will cover moves such as the Egyptian shoulder shimmies and undulations. Over the course of the session you will learn the fundamentals of the dance which we will put into a fun combination. There’s no better way to burn calories and stay in shape by dancing! Qi Gong (pronounced ‘Chee’ Gong) consist of the developmental exercises that one practices in the meditative martial art known as, Tai Chi. Through slow, simple, easy, and effective movements, we will not only develop out balance and coordination, but also reduce stress and tension while gaining a deepening sense of peace, power and harmony. About the Facility: The building has a large auditorium that is used for art, yoga, early childhood development, exercise, dance and more. We also have a full size gym with multiple hoops, ping pong Area and fully remodeled kitchen. Our outdoor amenities consist of tennis courts, baseball/ softball field, outdoor basketball court and a newly renovated children’s play ground.

Directions: The recreation center is located on Lawton St between 28th and 29th Avenue.

Bus Routes:  N Judah, 30th & Judah stop; #71 28th & Noriega stop

Attractions Near By: Ocean Beach and Golden gate park are a short drive or bus ride away.
