Kids will learn movements taken from various traditional and functional martial arts. This class DOES NOT teach fighting techniques or combat. Little Kickers will provide young participants basic knowledge and the foundation to grow in martial arts. This class is perfect for tots who want to be exposed to different movements other than in mainstream sports. Registrants must be at least 4 years old at the beginning of the course to participate. Students will have the opportunity to purchase a uniform and belts for an extra fee.

Karate originated in the Okinawan Islands of Japan and has branched out into many different styles. Karate Kidz is a structured class that teaches formalized, sequenced movements which represent offensive and defensive postures known as Kata.

Students will also learn kicking, punching, blocking and other open hand techniques. Students will have the opportunity to purchase a uniform and belts for an extra fee.

Mixed Martial Arts courses for youth ranging from Muay Thai, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, boxing, Judo, and wrestling. These classes are contact sports and competitive.

This is a beginning mixed martial art program for kids that focuses on the fundamentals of combat athletics. Kids learn all the forms of resistance based martial arts that involve standing-up, clinching, and ground fighting. Our motto is play as the way (developed by Straight Blast Gym) because training in mixed martial arts should be fun! Kids build up attributes such as self-esteem, self-discipline, & social skills while also increasing their physical attributes through competition and sparing. Sign up the day and practice that you want. You must be in the fifth or sixth grade to play. There are two options: Co-ed teams or all girls teams (girls teams will play in their own league). Games will be on Thursday, Friday, or Saturday at various locations in the city. Cost includes practices, 7 games plus playoffs and uniform. Practices start the week of January 5. Existing teams can also join the league for games only by calling Cortez Espinoza at 695-5006.

In this beginning course, participants will learn ground basics such as pushing & stopping then progress to advanced skills such as nose and tail stalls, “dropping in,” and kick turns. Get OUT and play! Participate in these active, outdoor programs and learn about the world around you.

We will provide transportation from Richmond Recreation Center to West Marin’s world class Cataract Falls. The hike up to the waterfall is more than 800 vertical feet through a beautiful canyon. We will have lunch on picnic tables in an oak forest and see incredible views of the Pacific Ocean, Stinson Beach, Bolinas Lagoon and San Andreas Fault from Bolinas Ridge. We will spend some time enjoying Stinson Beach and return for 6 p.m. pick up from Richmond Recreation Center.

Teens will participate in community projects every last Saturday of the month from January – March 2015. Community Projects may include SF Beach and/or Golden Gate Park clean up, serving food at Glide Memorial, or working at the SF Food Bank. Participants may be asked to meet directly at the service sites. Participants should bring a bag lunch, water and round trip bus fare ($1.50).

The ancient form of belly dance has been practiced for thousand of years and remains exceptionally popular throughout the world. Belly dancing tones muscles, is energized, and can be learned by people of all fitness levels. During the class, we will cover moves such as the Egyptian shoulder shimmies and undulations. Over the course of the session you will learn the fundamentals of the dance which we will put into a fun combination. There’s no better way to burn calories and stay in shape by dancing! Please wear comfortable dance oriented clothes and shoes for the class.

Facility FAQ

About the Facility: Richmond Rec center includes a full indoor basketball court, ping pong hallway, kitchen, and one multipurpose room with mirrors and window doors looking out to the basketball courts.

Renting the Facility: The multipurpose room is available for rental through our permits and reservations office. You can contact them by calling 415-831-6800.

Directions: The recreation center is located at 251 18th Ave between California St & Clement St

Bus Routes:  #1 - California -- 19th Ave. and California stop; walk 1/2 block north along 19th to the playground.
