Opened in Spring of 2017, In Chan Kaajal Park (originally called 17th & Folsom Street Park) is the first new neighborhood park to be acquired and built by the San Francisco Recreation and Park Department (SFRPD) in over a decade. Planning for the park began in 2008 with the adoption of the Eastern Neighborhoods Rezoning and Area Plan. The public planning process for the development of the park concept plan was done in partnership with PODER, and other neighborhood organizations. The Recreation and Park Commission approved the conceptual plan for the 17th & Folsom Park project at their Meeting of June 21, 2012.
The park was officially named In Chan Kaajal Park on Thursday, July 20 when it was confirmed by the SF Rec and Park Commission.
