Balboa pool is closed for capital improvements and will re-open in fall of 2017.

Balboa Swimming Pool is one of eight public swimming pools in the city. Featuring dimensions of 100’ x 40’ and six lanes, Balboa Pool has long been one of the city’s most popular sites for recreational and lap swims.

Balboa Pool Nearing Construction!

Within the next few weeks contractors will be moving onsite and will be staging at the basketball  courts, which will remain closed for the duration of construction due to safety concerns as the building gets seismically retrofitted, and the renovated. Thank you for your patience!

Swimming Lessons

Tots: The program aims to promote the Red Cross water safety knowledge and skills, aquatic adjustment, and swimming readiness skills, as well as fun enjoyment in the water. The parent is the primary instructor for their child and will accompany the child into the water during instruction. The parent must dress in a swim suit. Toddlers who are not potty trained must wear swim diapers.
Pre-Schoolers: ratio 1 adult per child

Youth-1: Participants will acquaint themselves with the aquatic environment. Topics covered in this class include breathing control, floating, prone glide, back float, arm strokes and kicking, and other elementary skills.

Youth-3: is designed for participants who have developed the elementary skills of swimming. Participants will be able to develop the front crawl stroke and back crawl techniques. This class is designed to improve stamina and coordination.

Youth-5: These levels will coordinate, refine, and polish all the skills learned in previous levels. The butterfly stroke, open turns and surface dives will be introduced. Emphasis is placed on developing efficiency, power, and endurance.

Adult –1: Participants will acquaint themselves with the aquatic environment. Topics covered in this class include breathing control, floating, prone glide, back float, arm strokes and kicking, and other elementary skills.

SF Rec & Park is happy to announce we are moving away from the paper scrip booklets and into the new technology of the "pass card." You can now purchase your 10-visit swim pass, AND we will now be offering monthly and annual memberships!

Starting July 25, purchase and renew ONLINE at sfrecpark.org/register, but you can set up your new account today. You can still purchase your passes or memberships at 3 walk-in locations:

  • Hamilton Pool – 1900 Geary Blvd (starting July 25)
  • Coffman Pool – 1700 Visitacion Ave (starting July 25)
  • McLaren Lodge Annex – 501 Stanyan St
  • note: we will NO longer be selling passes at the City Hall Treasurer's Office so head on over to Hamilton Pool or McLaren Lodge for the closest location to City Hall.

If you are currently purchasing Economic Need swim passes, you must have NEW account with Economic Scholarship applied. Once you set up your new account, please inform us so we can flag your new account as approved to purchase Economic Need passes and memberships online.
