SAN FRANCISCO (KGO) — If you can’t beat them, join them. That’s what San Francisco officials figured when they hired a street artist to combat a persistent graffiti problem.
An enormous mural now graces a giant wall at Potrero del Sol park in the Mission District. It was painted by artist Victor Reyes to inspire pride in the neighborhood and to discourage graffiti tagging.

“It is probably the number one strategy for graffiti abatement, is to create art at locations where graffiti most frequently occurs,” said Phil Ginsburg from the San Francisco Rec & Parks Department.

The city of San Francisco spends about $300,000 a year on graffiti abatement.

The word “Familia”, Spanish for family, was chosen from a list submitted by students at nearby Buena Vista Elementary.
